Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamelin was discharged more than one week ago from Buffalo Hospital after suffering a heart attack during a Jan. 2 game. He will be continuing his rehab at home with the team.
In a statement, Dr. Jamie Nadler (the care team leader for Hamlin at Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute) stated that “we have conducted a series of evaluations and tests, and in consultation avec the team physicians we are confident Damar can safely be discharged to continue with his rehabilitation at home with the Bills.”
Hamlin was discharged Monday from University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He had been there since Jan. 2 and was being treated for complications. Hamlin was then transferred to Buffalo General Medical Center the same day.
On Wednesday, Bills coach Sean McDermott stated that “we’re clearly grateful first and foremost for him being home and with his family and brother which is fantastic.” It’s hard to believe that he hasn’t been home in a while, but it is a wonderful feeling.
McDermott stated that they will leave the decision up to Hamlin as to when he is ready to go back to Bills’ Orchard Park facility, N.Y.
McDermott stated, “We’ll let it be up to him.” McDermott said that his health was the first thing on their minds. When he is ready we will welcome him back.
This Wednesday news comes as a continuation of positive developments Hamlin has made since Jan. 2, when the scary scene in Cincinnati was captured.
On Monday, Dr. William Knight of the UC Health Department stated that Hamlin was able to tolerate a regular diet and is now able to walk. He has also been undergoing occupational and physical therapy to help him continue his rehabilitation. Doctors said that Hamlin didn’t sustain “any cervical spine injuries” Monday and that Hamlin is currently able to walk with a “normal gait” because he continues to be “neurologically intact”.
